Scope and Contents

A copy of Etienne Carjat’s famous 1875 photographic portrait of French writer and politician Victor Hugo. The portrait has been cropped into an oval showing only the head and shoulders, and pasted onto a piece of cream-colored card with a decorative frame printed in gray ink. Likely once part of a set. Undated.

Biographical / Historical

Victor-Marie Hugo (1802-1885) was one of the most famous writers in French history, most well-known in the Anglophone world for his novels The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). A polymath, he produced novels, poems, drama, and visual art, as well as holding a prominent political role between 1848 and his death.
