Scope and Contents

Five letters in the hand of British philosopher L.P. Jacks, written between 1938 and 1939 during his time at Manchester College in Oxford. The letters are addressed to a “Mr. Clennell” and largely consist of minor College business.

Biographical / Historical

Lawrence Pearsall Jacks (1860-1955) was a British philosopher and Unitarian minister. He founded the Hibbert Journal, one of the most influential English forums for work in philosophy and religion, and was increasingly interested in parapsychology, acting as President of the Society for Psychical Research between 1917 and 1918. Jacks served as Principal of Manchester College, Oxford from 1915 until his retirement in 1931 and was a popular figure on lecture circuits in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
