Biographical / Historical
James Barron (1768-1851) was a noted officer in the United States Navy, for whom he commanded several famous vessels including the USS Essex and USS President. Following a conflict with the British in 1807, he was court-martialed and the subsequent controversy led to a duel between Barron and rival naval captain Stephen Decatur, whom he shot and killed.
