Vermont Legal Documents, 1784 - 1834
Scope and Contents
37 legal documents, mostly manuscript but some partially printed, almost all generated from the Courts of Woodstock, Windsor County, Vermont. The documents pertain to a number of legal matters, largely debt collection, land transfers, and appeals. The majority are signed by clerk of the court Major Benjamin Swan (1762–1839), a significant figure in Vermont history: Swann was a merchant, banker, and Federalist politician, and held the posts of Justice of the Peace, Postmaster, and Vermont State Treasurer.
