Grant Richards, 1898 - 1904

Scope and Contents

Approximately 125 pieces of notes and letters from 22 correspondents sent to and from publisher and writer Grant Richards. Of particular note are materials from Hiram Maxim, inventor of the first automatic machine gun, regarding his book Monte Carlo: Facts and Fallacies, letters from Agnes Grace Weld, niece of Alfred Lord Tennyson and photographic model for Lewis Carroll, and materials from WWI-era poet and journalist Jessie Pope related to her book The Little Soldier, which was published in Richards’s “Dumpy Books for Children” series. A curatorial file compiled by Scheetz himself is also included.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Biographical / Historical

Franklin Thomas Grant Richards (21 October 1872 – 24 February 1948) was a British publisher and writer. He began his own eponymous publishing house aged just 24, and published works by a number of significant players including George Bernard Shaw, A. E. Housman, and G.K. Chesterton, alongside a series of children’s books known as the “Dumpy Books for Children.” In 1901 he launched The World's Classics series of reprints of literary classics, a series still published today as Oxford University Press’ Oxford World Classics.
