Italian Photograph Album, 1878
Scope and Contents
A late 19th century photo album containing 124 mounted albumen photographs of Italy, including cityscapes, ruins, churches, art and architecture, and other elements of Italian culture, as well as images of Queen Margherita and King Umberto I. The album itself is quite fine, with a cream leather cover stamped in gold with the title “Italia” and an image of Romulus and Remus with the wolf on the front, and the date 1878 and initials G.L.C. on the back. A note in Scheetz’s hand on the second front flyleaf provides provenance information, suggesting that the volume was purchased at the sale of the library of John J. Slocum (1914-1997), the American diplomat, literary agent, scholar, and bibliophile.
