Biographical / Historical
Sir Idris Llewelyn Foster (1911-1984) was a Welsh scholar of medieval language and literature, and Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, where he also held the chair in Celtic. Foster’s main academic contribution was to the study of the medieval Welsh Culhwch and Olwen, but he was also heavily involved in the greater literary and historical circles of Wales, including as Treasurer and Vice President of the National Library of Wales, which institution holds the majority of his papers.
