Biographical / Historical
William G. Moore (1829-1898) was a lifelong Washingtonian. At the onset of the American Civil War, he enlisted as a member of the Washington-based military unit known as the Old National Rifles, became private secretary to the Secretary of War, and rose through the ranks, eventually earning the rank of Colonel. He served as private secretary briefly to President Abraham Lincoln and then to his successor Andrew Johnson, before becoming superintendent of the Metropolitan Police of Washington DC in 1886. Moore is considered to be the father of modern policing in the DC; his tenure ushered in a number of new regulations, examinations, and police courts. He died in office in 1898.
