Eric Thacher Clarke, 1919 - 1920

Scope and Contents

Correspondence and other ephemera from the paper of Eric Clarke, a British-German musician resident in the United States. The materials relate to a contest Clarke is advertising for the best new musical round composition: there are several letters to American musical publications asking them to print an advertisement for the competition, as well as a copy of the announcement itself, and several letters related to the entries. Also included are copies of The New Music Review and Church Music Review, December 1919, and a pamphlet called Musical Opinion, undated but printed in London.

Biographical / Historical

Eric Thacher Clarke (1890-1968) was a British-German musician and author, brother of violinist and composer Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979) and prominent biochemist Hans Thacher Clarke (1887-1972). Clarke was resident in Detroit, Michigan by 1919 and later lived in New York City. In 1935 he published Music in Everyday Life, based on a study he undertook for the Carnegie Corporation of New York. He died in Washington DC in 1968.
