Murray Clarke Family, 1863 - 1921

 File — Box: 26

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of approximately 200 pieces of correspondence and other ephemera belonging to members of the Murray Clarke family (sometimes styled Clarke or Murray-Clarke) and their descendents, mostly in the 1870s and 80s, but with some items dating from the first two decades of the 20th century. A Welsh family based in Abergele, Denbighshire, William Murray Clarke (1810-1887) and his wife appear to have had at least four children: a son Walter, and three daughters Maggie, Janet, and Isabel (Bella) – to whom the vast majority of the correspondence is addressed. Bella married Edward Windsor Davies, part of a well-known tea importing family based in Liverpool, and had a son, Gordon. Numerous other friends and family members also make an appearance in the collection. Of particular interest may be a wedding invitation from the early 20th century containing a lock of hair.
