Scope and Contents

Approximately 25 letters, pamphlets, offprints, and other ephemera belonging to Thomas Farrant Higham, an Oxford scholar of Classical Literature. The majority of the collection is correspondence often accompanied by a piece of scholarly work discussed therein. Of particular note is Higham’s correspondence with C.J. Fordyce (1885-1956), including the typescript and corrected proof sheets of his review of Léon Hermann’s Art poétique (1951) published in “Classical Review” in 1953. The materials assembled here are from the latter part of Higham’s life, dating from 1952-1967. Correspondents include Classicists A.M. Dale (1901-1967), Mark M.O. Morford (d. 2019), and E.L.B. Meurig-Davies, as well as British scientist Sir Gavin de Beer (1899-1972).

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Farrant Higham (1890-1975) was an English scholar and translator. He studied Classics at Trinity College, Oxford, where he also spent most of his academic career – as fellow, dean, and senior tutor of Trinity (first elected 1914), and subsequently as Public Orator of the University. His published works mostly relate to ancient Greek poetry.
