Judith and Arthur Hart Burling, 1942 - 1948
Scope and Contents
28 works in watercolor and ink on paper, including examples of Chinese calligraphy, given to the Burlings upon their departure from China. The collection includes a sketch by noted Austrian caricaturist Friedrich Schiff (1908-1968), signed “Shanghai 1942”. Many of the works contain red Chinese seals, an area of research for the Burlings. The collection also includes a curatorial file containing articles written by the couple, as well as a printed page from a catalog, compiled by Scheetz.

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. Judith (1900-) & Arthur Hart Burling lived in China for 20 years and wrote a comprehensive book on Chinese decorative arts, Chinese Art (1953).
