Biographical / Historical

Arthur Joyce Lunel Cary (1888-1957) was an Anglo-Irish novelist and writer. He worked in the Red Cross during the first Balkan War in 1912 and then as an assistant district officer for the British government in the Bauchi province in Nigeria until the outbreak of WWI, at which time he fought against neighboring Cameroon, then occupied by Germany. By 1920 he moved back to England to be with his wife, Gertrude Margaret Ogilvie, and two sons, and it was then he began writing in earnest: An American Visitor (1933), The African Witch (1936), and Mister Johnson (1939) draw on his years in Nigeria, though his most popular was The Horse's Mouth (1944). During and after WWII, he published political treatises Power in Men (1939) and Process of Real Freedom (1943) as well as two idiosyncratic long poems, Marching Soldier (1945) and The Drunken Sailor (1947), and by the 1950s Cary had an established reputation in both the UK and US.
