Biographical / Historical
Sir (Thomas Henry) Hall Caine (1853-1931) was a British novelist, playwright, and critic, famed for his international literary celebrity and status as an unprecedentedly bestselling author. Caine was enthralled by the poetry of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and befriended the poet in 1879, eventually becoming his private secretary and living in his London home until Rossetti’s death in 1882. Through his contacts in the Arts and Crafts and Pre-Raphaelite movements, Caine also befriended William Morris and Bram Stoker, who would later dedicate Dracula to him. Caine published 15 romantic novels and his book The Christian (1897) was the first novel in Britain to sell 1 million copies.
