Henry L. Abbot, 1861 - 1925
Scope and Contents
Approximately 80 pieces from the personal archive of American military engineer and Army officer Henry L. Abbot, related largely to his scientific and military pursuits as a Union General after the American Civil War, dated between 1861 and 1925. The collection is mostly correspondence, but an Army Corps of Engineers handbook on guns, a lithograph, and various documents and notes are also present, including several lists of letters and autographs, likely made by Abbot himself. Notable correspondents include Thomas Edison, French Ambassador Jean Jules Jusserand, Charles W. Eliot, and William Dean Howells.

Conditions Governing Access
Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Biographical / Historical
Major General Henry Larcom Abbot (1831-1927) was a military engineer and career officer in the United States Army, where he made notable contributions both in engineering and as a commanding officer for the Union during the Civil War. He conducted several transportation surveys in the American West, as well as scientific studies of the Mississippi River, and subsequently became a consultant for the Panama Canal lock system in his retirement.
