Miscellaneous documents in Arabic script, 1790 - 1850

 File — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous manuscripts in Arabic and Ottoman Turisk script, late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century. A few show notes or calculations, but many contain repetitive text; others contain illustrated charts of national flags and other maritime signaling intelligence. These manuscripts were originally described as part of the Nicholas Cleary Collection, now separated, sometime before 1970.

Specifically, the nautical documents are of an Ottoman origin and include kapudan işareti (or signals for identification of vessels) and are copied in modern Turkish naskh of the ninteenth century. Further, there are illustrations of işaret küçük (or small national flags) written in medium cursive naskh in 1902.
