National Endowment for the Arts, Jane Alexander Nomination, 1993

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 6

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

Papers of Melanne Verveer (1944-), Chief of Staff for First Lady, Hillary Clinton and U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues in the Obama Administration, including schedules, briefing books, speeches, memorabilia, and trip materials, as well as files on the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing) and memoranda on health care reform. A large portion of the collection includes travel books from 1993-2000 detailing the First Lady’s official travels across the world. This includes itineraries, background information on the destination country and US relations with those countries, press releases on events during travel, planning correspondence, briefing memorandums for both the President and the First Lady with state goals of their trips, talking points, and full speeches. A few key event notebooks of particular interest include the UN Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995 and Trip of the First Lady to the Middle East in 1998. The collection also includes Hillary Clinton's oral histories, documented in 2023.

Some of these materials formed the basis for the exhibition "Women's Rights Are Human Rights: The United States and the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women", held at the Booth Family Center For Special Collections between October 12, 2021, and February 13, 2022. They retain their arrangement for the exhibition (by exhibit case), and have been further separated by type of item: documents, photos, and objects.

Please note that the table of contents for the travel books sometimes include documents that are not included in this collection.
