Photograph albums, 1947 - 1949

 File — Multiple Containers

Scope and Contents

This file holds the contents of three uniform photo albums documenting events related to the work of Erich Isenstead in OMGUS, all being black and white gelatin silver prints; most of the prints are small format, approximately 3.5" x 4.5", with 36 prints about 8" x 10". All of the photos have been removed from the albums and re-housed in boxes 7 and 8, along with accompanying documents.

The bulk of the photos document a three-day visit of Allied dignitaries, delegates of the Empire Parliamentary Association who toured Munich from September 30 to October 2, 1948; the visit included a variety of industrial, commercial, social, and governmental sites, ending with a visit to Dachau concentration camp (listed on the itinerary, but not apparently included in the photographs). A typed schedule and itinerary for this event (located in box 7) serves as a basis for dating and identifying the subjects of most of the photographs in the collection. Other photos cover newly reconstructed bridge openings on the autobahn, press conferences held by OMGUS, and public events broadcast by Radio Munich.

All photographs seem to be intended for the press, although most have no stamps, captions, dates or other notes on the back. The prints that are copyright stamped identify two photographers: Lionel S. Partegas, Director, Forensic Investigative Technical Laboratory (OMGUS), and a Bayerisches Pressbild photographer named Poehlmann.
