IX Centenario della Cattredrale di Fiesole (1028 - 1928), Ricordo, 1928

 Item — Box: 11, Folder: 8

Content Description

From the Collection:

The papers of Charles Augustus Strong (1862-1940), American psychologist and philosopher, comprise materials, in addition to Strong's library, transferred from various locations including the Villa La Balze in Fiesole, Italy and the Georgetown University Office of International Programs. All of the material in the collection originated at the Villa, where it had been gathered by the time of Strong's death. The papers include letters, manuscripts, published material, and photographs, arranged into four series, with the bulk of the collection being comprised of correspondence and manuscripts. A fifth series, also originating from the library at the Villa Le Balze, comprising books and papers used by, or related to, George Santayana (a frequent guest there) has been added.

Of particular note is Strong's correspondence with his father, the prominent Baptist theologian and minister Augustus Hopkins Strong, which records the tension between the two as Charles (who had when young planned to join the ministry, as well) was led by his scientific and philosophic pursuits to leave the church and adopt a skeptical perspective.
