 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Michael Richey papers 2, consists of original correspondence from personal friends and members of the Richey family; as well as printed material including clippings, journals, and magazines featuring articles by and about Michael Richey.

A portion of the correspondence is from the notable circle of artists who congregated at the home of English sculptor Eric Gill, (1882-1940), on Pigotts Farm in Buckinghamshire. These include Gill, Anthony Foster, and Rene Hague. Additional correspondence centers on Richey's involvement with sailing and navigation, including letters from H.G. "Blondie" Hasler, Prince Philip, and Eva G.R. Taylor. Correspondence is also included from other well-known acquaintances such as Harman Grisewood, Shirley Hazzard, Ken Thompson, and Evelyn Waugh.

The collection contains correspondence of the Richey family, including letters written by Michael Richey and his brother Paul, to their parents, during their school days at Downside Abbey; and later letters written from Pigotts Farm where Michael Richey was working as an apprentice. Letters to his parents, written by Richey during World War II, provide detailed descriptions of his days aboard ships with the British Navy. Family correspondents include Richey’s father, George, writing to his wife, Adelaide (Richey’s mother), while he was serving in World War I.

The collection includes some photographs and manuscripts by Richey.

Michael Richey provided annotations to many of the letters, indicated with an asterisk (*). The complete annotations may be found in Box 2 Folder 65 of this collection.
