Scope and Contents

Glimpses of Some Contemporaries, by Edwin Emerson. Negative photostats of articles by Emerson under the general heading; Glimpses of Some Contemporaries.

1. Vox populi, Washington Journal, 22 January 1943, four columns, one sheet, 14 x 21 inches: describes a brief meeting in the Munich railway station, witnessed by Emerson as a school boy, of the old German Emporer William, Prince Bismarck, and Count von Moltke with King Ludwig II of Bavaria. This was Ludwig's last public appearance.

2. Ludwig II of Bavaria. The Mad King, Washington Journal, 19 February 1943, four columns, one sheet, 14 x 22 inches: stories of events witnessed by Emerson (eleven years old) in Bavaria in 1881, involving King Ludwig, Prince Otto, and Richard Wagner. Notation in white pencil by Emerson at bottom of sheet.

3. Ludwig II of Bavaria. Part 2, Washington Journal, 26 February 1943, four columns, one sheet, 14x22 inches: first-hand stories about King Ludwig and his castles.

4. Ludwig II of Bavaria. Part 3, Washington Journal, 5 March 1943, four columns, one sheet, 14x22 inches: Emerson's account of being in the courtyard of Schloss Berg, the royal castle, immediately following the deaths of Ludwig and his physician, Dr. von Gudden in 1886.

5. Ludwig II of Bavaria. Part 4, Washington Journal, 12 March 1943, four columns, one sheet, 14x22 inches: Emerson's account of Ludwig's approaching insanity and downfall.

6. Ludwig II of Bavaria. Part 5, Washington Journal, 19 March 1943, two and a half columns, sheet trimmed to 10x22 inches: Emerson's account of Ludwig's final days, his paranoia and megalomania, and his funeral.
