Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The American Catholic Sermon collection was formed from manuscript sermons from the Woodstock College Archives, the Maryland Province Archives, and the Georgetown University Archives. It consists of some 456 autograph manuscript sermons, two contemporary written transcriptions, and four printed items (some only fragments) by 44 different preachers, including 55 texts by Archbishop John Carroll and seven by Georgetown's first president, Rev. Robert Plunkett. The sermons are arranged alphabetically by preacher's last name.

Conditions Governing Access

Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Collections stored off site require a minimum of three days for retrieval. For use of all manuscripts collections, researchers are advised to contact the Booth Family Center for Special Collections in advance of any visit.

Bolton, John (Roman Catholic, 1742-1809) No title. Text: "Assumpta est Maria in caelum mary is assumed into Heaven words taken out of the Introit of Mass." Alternate text: "The Queen stood on thy right hand, in gilded clothing, surrounded with variety os 44. v11" 8 pages Imperfect: incomplete at end. Notes at head: "Newp. 1772 Sac. 1773 Portob 1784 St. Joseph's 1789 Do 1797" Georgetown University. Maryland Province Archives. Bolton, a Jesuit until the suppression in 1773, served in Maryland from 1771 until his death. He did not rejoin the Society upon its restoration.
