Most manuscripts collections at the Georgetown University Booth Family Center for Special Collections are open to researchers; however, restrictions may apply to some collections. Biographical / Historical
Bowring was born in Exeter to a working class family. Bowring wrote original poems and hymns, translations of folk-songs of European nations, and works on political and economic subjects. Bowring served as a British MP, British consul, and the fourth governor of Hong Kong from 1854 - 1859. Bowring knew 200 languages and could speak 100. He was knighted in 1854.
