From the Collection:

The Fitzhugh Green, Sr., Papers consist of Green's correspondence; diaries and notebooks; manuscripts (autograph and typed) to articles and prospective books; reprints of articles/papers; clippings from newspapers and magazines; and photographs including many negatives of family and a notable set of glass slides showing scenes from his Arctic travels. Most prominent are the series consisting of correspondence, scrapbooks, articles, notebooks and journals belonging to Green about the Crocker Land Expedition (dating from 1912-1916/17). A small box of Green's files relating to his service in the Navy is included. These papers consist primarily of official correspondence between Green and the Navy Department concerning personnel matters such as his assignments, leave, and salary. It should be noted that all material, including clippings, journals, and notebooks relating to the Crocker Land Expedition are grouped together in the same series. Refer to the Series Synopsis for an outline of the arrangement of the material in this collection. Material concerning Fitzhugh Green can also be found in the papers of Fitzhugh Green, Jr., which are housed in the Special Collections Division of Georgetown University Library.

Container Summary

Contains correspondence relating to the Crocker Land Expedition. Includes the following - @ TLS 4/20/1915, 2 pp. on official printed letterhead for the Crocker land Expedition under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History, the American Geographical Society, and the University of Illinois, to FG from Donald Bartlett Peare: "Sir,...The reports of your successful discovery and marking of the glacier are most gratifying; and we feel confident that your labors will be rewarded, and even greater discoveries made. We should like to take this opportunity of reminding you of the great benefit the world will derive from this extraordinary project of yours..." @ 3 ANS in Danish (?), signed H. Bryden, concerning the expedition. Dated 2/10/1916-2/12/1916. @ TLS, 5/11/1916, 2 pp. on letterhead for the U.S. Naval Radio Service, to Mrs. Charles E. Green from W.H.G. Bullard (?): "My dear Mrs. Green, This is to acknowledge the receipt of your note of April 29, 1916, with its inclosure of a letter addressed to you by Mr. Geo. H. Sherwood, and the delay in replying has been due to pressure of official work. You have asked me to comment on Mr. Sherwoods's letter and to give you an opinion as to the advisability of asking for National aid for getting into communication with the Crocker Land Expedition. As I understand it, Mr. Sherwood is the Acting Chairman of the Committee in Charge of the Crocker Land Expedition and possibly is responsible for the conduct of its affairs from this end of the line, and as such I should judge he would be the logical person to institute a request for a government vessel to seek the expedition in northern latitudes, and am very much afraid not much attention would be given to a request from outside parties..." @ ALS, 9/14/1916, to FG from W.H.G. Bullard: "My dear Green, I have the pleasure of acknowledging the receipt of your note of September 11. I am extremely pleased to know that my efforts ...resulted in peace of mind for your mother during your long absence..." @ TLS, 8/19/1916, from the American Consul General in Copenhagen, announcing the return of FG from the Crocker Land Expedition to the U.S., and verifying his credentials.
