Collection-level Scope and Content Note

From the Collection:

The Fitzhugh Green, Sr., Papers consist of Green's correspondence; diaries and notebooks; manuscripts (autograph and typed) to articles and prospective books; reprints of articles/papers; clippings from newspapers and magazines; and photographs including many negatives of family and a notable set of glass slides showing scenes from his Arctic travels. Most prominent are the series consisting of correspondence, scrapbooks, articles, notebooks and journals belonging to Green about the Crocker Land Expedition (dating from 1912-1916/17). A small box of Green's files relating to his service in the Navy is included. These papers consist primarily of official correspondence between Green and the Navy Department concerning personnel matters such as his assignments, leave, and salary. It should be noted that all material, including clippings, journals, and notebooks relating to the Crocker Land Expedition are grouped together in the same series. Refer to the Series Synopsis for an outline of the arrangement of the material in this collection. Material concerning Fitzhugh Green can also be found in the papers of Fitzhugh Green, Jr., which are housed in the Special Collections Division of Georgetown University Library.

Container Summary

Contains 2 ALS, 2 TLS to FG from Allen, the wireless operator for the Crocker Land Expedition led by Donald MacMillan (1913-1917). @ 1. ALS addressed from Niakornarsuk at 7:40 a.m., dated Sunday April 9, 1916: "Dear Fitz, Sorry to have to send back bad news: we arrived here yesterday at 5 p.m. and found the fjord full of young ice, thru which it would be impossible to get a boat or kyak. We had then to stay here over night - the men thought perhaps in the morning we could go. But now the ice is much thicker and the weather colder It may be some time before we can cross. Should you fellows come tomorrow, we should all be held up here - and there is neither dog nor man food for us..." @ 2. ALS addressed from S.S. Hans Egede, Egedesminde, Greenland. Dated "Last June this year": Dear Fitz: Upon my trying to start something in the way of a search for your box supposedly lost here I was informed quite positively by Johannus Balle that you had found your lost box at Godhavn the day before we left..." @ 3. TLS addressed from Washington, D.C., dated 2/22/1917: "Dear Fitz, Have you met the enemy yet? I am banking on your turret. I can imagine that there is something doing all the time in the fleet these days. Here in Washington life goes on as usual, except that one must have a pass to get in a government building, and the navy yards are quite inaccessible...Peary has been censured for making a speech in which he said that it would be no job at all for enemy air planes to fly up from Hampton Roads and blow up the unprotected Capitol..." @ 4. TLS addressed from Washington, D.C., dated April 12, 1917: "Dear Fitz, Quite some time has elapsed since I've heard from you, and I'm beginning to wonder if I put a stamp on my last letter. However, I suppose your whereabouts are indefinite enough to account for any slip in communication. What I am writing now for, Fitz, is to tell you that I have put in my request to take the radio gunner's examination..." @ Includes 2 TL carbon copies from FG, both dated 5/16/1917.
