Container Summary
1 Typed Letter Signed dated 5/4/1898, discussing the war with Spain and thanking Byington's son George for writing a note to "The Gazette" to defend Porter against rumors concerning himself, President McKinley, and Secretary Boyle. Mr. Hearts of the "Journal" then fired the man who wrote the stories. Says that Lounsbury is likely to win the election with republican backing and that there may be an overthrow of the party because of the power of "the lobby." Compares current political situation to the Civil War and says that Frisbie was defeated in the Hartford elections. Sent from Executive Mansion, Washington to Consul of the United States, Naples, Italy.
