Container Summary

Manuscript #284: 3 letters from Algernon Charles Swinburne to Edward John Trelawny (1792-1881). 1. ALS dated April 24, 1878 (3 pages + postmarked envelope, on mourning stationery in memory of Swinburne's father Charles Henry Swinburne (1797-1877). Encloses a proof of Swinburne's poem, "For the Feast of Giordano Bruno," (published in "Poems and Ballads, Second Series," (Chatto & Windus, 1878), about which Swinburne writes, "...I send you a littlel poem of mine, not yet published, on one of the most illlustrious martyrs of atheism. It has always seemed to me that if Shelley could possibly have chosen (as they say he once thought of doing) to forsake poetry for metaphysicl philosophy -- a poor exchange, had it been possible -- he would have been in many ways the counterpart of Giordano Bruno." 2. ALS dated September 9, 1878 (2 pages + postmarked envelope), thanking Trelawny for sending a "letter of August 1st." 3. ALS dated November 19, 1879 (2 pages), requesting permission to dedicate a collection of poems to Trelawny, which was the forthcoming, "Song of the Springtides," (1880). 4. Includes autograph draft of a letter from Trelawny to Swinburne, dated August 1, 1878 (2 pages). 5. Envelope bearing autograph note in unknown hand: "3 Letters A.C. Swinburne to E.J. Trelawny."
