Container Summary

Manuscript #199: ALS (undated fragment, 2 pages) by Algernon Charles Swinburne to unidentified: "...doctors, who considering me rather pulled down & seedy in general (as indeed you must have seen at Oxford before we left) packe me off to the country & I indulged at East Dene in rhymes, Bocaccio, Chaurcer, & general stagnation...Seabathing all through July left me rather Herculean than otherwise..." Reference to Edward Burne Jones and to William Morris ("Topsy"). Verso page includes fragment of a poem prefaced with the comment: "And now, if you fulfill these directions, consider the following as a sugarplum after physic. I shall not send anyone else such trash to serve as fodder & I confide in you not to shew anyone the full extent of my weakness. Accept it as a rply to your first epistle. I spent a quarter of an hour (timed by watch) upon it this morning..." See also curatorial file and index card #199.
