Scope and Contents note

From the Collection:

The Murray Linwood Marshall Papers contain the original manuscripts and records of Mr. Marshall's academic and poetic work. Central to the collection are the records of Mr. Marshall's various sonnet publications, including Sonnet Sequences, a monthly magazine he edited from 1928 to 1958, numerous sonnet anthologies, and Mr. Marshall's translation of Lorenzo di Medici's "The Comment." Also included is Mr. Marshall's correspondence with friends, subscribers, and other editors from throughout his time as editor of Sonnet Sequences. Index cards containing address information of Sonnet Sequences subscribers supplement the collection and give a picture of the expansive reach of the magazine, which was shipped across the United States and the world.

There are several images that enhance the collection, and provide a picture of the people contributing to Sonnet Sequences. There are images of numerous sonnet prize winners, as well as images provided to supplement the text in Sonnet Sequences. In addition to these images there are many contemporary newspaper clippings that demonstrate how poetry was being discussed and presented in the middle of the twentieth century.

Marshall's extensive collection of poetry books and "little magazines," including a complete run of Sonnet Sequences, is housed separately in the rare books collection of the Georgetown University Library Booth Family Center for Special Collections.
