Series II: Afghanistan, 2001-2006
Scope and Contents note
The Andrew Natsios papers contain a variety of documentary sources. Emails from Natsios and other government officials are one major source, as are printed news articles on topics pertaining to USAID's work. The collection also has numerous reports and debriefings from USAID workers, contractors working for USAID, and other government entities engaged in aid work such as the Army Corp of Engineers, as well as congressional testimony, technical papers, and international communications with the United Nations or foreign governments. Also included are works, some by Natsios, speculating on the future of humanitarian aid, the effectiveness of existing aid structures, and the interplay between military force and humanitarian aid.
This collection contains five series. The first series contains documents dating from 1989-1998, though the bulk of the series is concentrated on Natsios's time with USAID from 1989-1992. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
The remaining series contain documents from 2001-2007. The second series contains documents pertaining to USAID's work in Afghanistan from 2001 through Jan. 2006, and is arranged chronologically. The third series contains documents pertaining to USAID's work in Iraq from 2003 through Jan. 2006, and is also arranged chronologically. The fourth series contains documents on USAID's work in Sudan, as well as Natsios's efforts as Special Envoy for Darfur. The documents date from 2001-Dec. 2007, with the majority dating from Jan. 2006-Dec. 2007, when Natsios worked as Special Envoy. The fifth and final series contains miscellaneous subject files from 2001-2007, and is arranged alphabetically by subject. USAID's relief work after the 2005 tsunami and human rights work in North Korea both feature prominently in this series.
