Collection-level Scope and Content Note

The Edward A. Drake Papers are primarily comprised of correspondence by officials of the Panama Railroad Company (mostly dating from 1905 through 1927), and by notable Panamanian politicians and government ministers (total of 62 folders). Content is personal with some references to Panamanian political events of the time, as well as to the railroad business. An additional eight folders include a few personal letters by Edward Drake; condolence letters written to Drake's wife, Jeanette Louise, after his death; newsclippings about Drake and the Panama Railroad Company; and some photographs and pictures relating to the company and the Panama Canal (U.S. steamships in the Culebra Cut, company headquarters, etc.). The collection is completed by an official Panama souvenir of a section of railroad tie, a leatherbound volume of illuminated resolutions presented by the Panama Railroad Company to Mrs. Drake in honor of Drake after his death, and finally, a music score entitled, 'Himno National de la Republica de Panama' signed by Juan Domingo de Obaldia, president of Panama (1907, 1908-1910).

Container Summary

This folder contains the literature originally located in the printedenvelope glued to the back of the official Panama souvenir railroad tiepresented at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco,1915. (For souvenir, see Box 2 Folder 1). Includes printed description of the history of the construction of therailroad, as well as an extract of a letter (4/25/1915) from GeorgeGoethals, as governor of the Canal Zone, to D. DeBarrows, vice president ofthe Isthmian Canal Souvenir Co., concerning the taking of souvenir samplesof soil from the Culebra Cut. Also included is an invoice for delivery of500 similar ties from the Isthmian Canal Souvenir Co. to the Isthmian CanalCommission.
