(Box 1, Folders 1 - 51) This is Part I of the Correspondence Series, containing correspondence from Joyce Kilmer to his wife Aline Kilmer, his son Kenton Kilmer, friends such as Rev. James J. Daly, S.J. and Rev. Charles L. O'Donnell, C.S.C. Folders 1:1 - 1:44. Correspondence from Joyce Kilmer to Aline Kilmer. The date span of the letters is from 1907, before his marriage, through 1918, a few months before he was killed. Folders 1:45 - 1:48. Correspondence from Joyce Kilmer to Kenton Kilmer. Written from France during the former's military service in WWI, from October 1917 through July 1918. Folders 1:49 - 1:58. Other correspondence is to Rev. James J. Daly, S.J. as well as to Rev. Charles L. O'Donnell, C.S.C.

Contains ALS from JK to AK. 5 pp. JK refers to his "Irish half." Againrefers to AK's book collaboration with Margaret Widdemer, warning AK aboutputting the Kilmer name on a work that may offend the public, "...please bevery careful that there is nothing...to offend, in the slightest degree,the special public which buys our work." JK also discourses on theimportance of writing about the Catholic faith, "I'd rather writemoderately well about it than magnificently well about anything else."Refers to writers such as Thomas Daly, Francis Thompson, Swinburne, andThackeray. Other references made by JK include his own works, "Literaturein the Making," of which he comments, "a harmless enough book but utterlyworthless. I can honestly offer "Trees" and "Main Street" to Our Lady."Finally, comments on AK's poem, "Experiences."
