Collection-level Scope and Content Note
The Gustave A. Weigel, S.J. Papers are part of the Archives of Woodstock College, housed in the Special Collections Division of Georgetown University's Lauinger Library. The papers document Weigel's career from high school through his death in 1964. Of special interest are the many pieces pertaining to the politics and culture of Latin America, and particularly of Chile, where Weigel lived for 10 years. He was also deeply concerned with the issues of ecumenism and intellectual life among American Catholics, as his articles and lecture notes reveal. Fr. Weigel was present at the first and second sessions of the Second Vatican Council, and his papers contain his own notes and memoranda, as well as clippings from this period. Although Fr. Weigel did not have a strong taste for letter writing, his correspondence does contain several letters which illuminate events at the Second Vatican Council as well as letters from leading Protestant theologians such as Paul Tillich and Reinhold Niebuhr. Fr. Weigel's apologetics for Catholicism in America bolstered the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy in 1960, and clippings from Time magazine and the New York Times noting his contributions are contained in box 11.
