The Individual Authors Series contains correspondence, manuscripts, questionnaires from the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors, photos, publications, and clippings relating to individual authors who were accepted or considered as members of the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors established by Sister Mary Joseph, S.L., in 1932. The series is arranged alphabetically by author. Boxes 1-66.

Container Summary

21 ALS and 1 ACS from Stephen Brown, S.J., elected to the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors in 1932, to Sister Mary Joseph refer to "the recognition of Catholic literature as such in Catholic education," Irish authors such as George O'Neill, S.J., Helena Concannon, and Hugh de Blacam, paper shortages during the war, Jesuit censors, British trade restrictions, and Gallery business. Brown also states "I enclose your lists marked accordingly...I have blackballed only one--Evelyn Waugh, as I consider his books unworthy of a Catholic and seriously objectionable."
