Container Summary

5 Typed Letters Signed ; 1 Check Stub. This correspondence primarily deals with BBC (and New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation) productions of Hugh Merrick's 1957 publication Out of the Night. R.D. Smith adapted the story for the BBC in 1962. The letter from the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, written by Chief Producer W.S. Austin on 10/3/1962, is in response to a letter from Merrick; they used the R.D. Smith script, but could not send Merrick a tape or copy of the script, as that would be an infringement of copyright. Austin recommends that Merrick write to the BBC. The BBC paid Merrick a fee 6 pounds, 6 shillings, presumably for the use of Out of the Night. Additional letters from the BBC (10/18/1962 from Heather Dean and 11/26/1962 from R.D. Smith) refer to the December 15, 1962 BBC Afternoon Theatre Broadcast of Out of the Night. Another work by Merrick, "The Guinea Pig" was shone on the BBC on Easter Monday; two letters (04/26/1963 and 05/09/1963) refer to this.
