Contains typed manuscript of a journal maintained by Rice over the period August - November 1940, 1 item. Of interest are entries regarding Rice's summer spent at Olean, New York; news regarding his associations from Columbia University, including Thomas Merton, Robert Lax, Jim Knight, Robert Gibney; continued efforts at novel writing and art work; experiences while working at the Jester of Columbia; moving back home after college and his efforts to find employment. TMS, 116 pp. Author's corrections throughout. aug 15 : "(there is) always someone eating, someone, shitting, someone sleeping, someone cooking, someone typing, drawing, chopping wood, rattling dishes, pouring dishes, hitching to town; all this in the cottage, and when the water runs out half of these things are prevented or hindered; and the other half go on in greater force."
