1 Typed Letter (carbon) from Harold H. Tittmann, Jr. to U.S. Secretary of State James F. Byres, regarding the efforts made by Pope Pius XII in 1939 and 1940 for the cause of peace. References to a pamphlet "The Work of Peace of the Holy See and Italy" [not retained in this collection] prepared by Domenico Tardini. Tittmann provides excerpt from the pamphlet about the Pope's role in diplomacy during World War II. References to trying to keep Italy out of the war, Benito Mussolini's thoughts on how long the war would last, an audience of von Ribbentrop with Pope Pius XII, Cardinal Maglione, Sumner Welles, and Dino Alfieri. Sent from Vatican City to Washington, D.C. A post-it note was kept in this folder: "Pope's efforts for peace, 1939-1940."
