Baumgartner, Appellinaris. Black-and-White Photograph of Baumgartner and fellow Capuchin Friars. Dated 2/11/1939. Caption on back of photo: "Bearded Capuchin Friars, Headed by Rev. Appellinaris Baumgartner (extreme right) chant the office of the dead for the repose of the soul of Pope Pius XI who died last night [2/10/1939]. Capuchins are bearded because the founder of the order, Matteo Di Bassi, was. It is the chief offshoot of the Franciscan Order, and was started in 1520." Transferred from the Minneapolis Public Library.
