Collection-level Scope and Content Note

From the Collection:

The Richard M. Helms Papers: Part 4 consist of a small number of documents pertaining to the career of Richard M. Helms, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency from 1966 to 1973 and U.S. Ambassador to Iran from 1973 to 1976. This particular portion of Helms' personal papers principally contains letters of recommendation on his behalf written to the "Chicago Daily News" in 1937 and to the U.S. Navy Bureau of Navigation in 1942. These documents shed light on Helms' successes as a journalist both at home and abroad. One letter of recommendation was written by Wallace Deuel, a Special Assistant to William J. Donovan. Another letter, this one dated 9/19/1946, from the U.S. War Department to Helms informed him of the termination of the Office of Strategic Services. Also of note is a letter dated 4/11/1968 from U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson to Helms praising Helms' work with him over the years.

The Richard M. Helms Papers: Part 4 supplement the Richard M. Helms Papers: Parts 1, 2, and 3 already preserved in the Georgetown University Library Booth Family Center for Special Collections.
