Container Summary
1 Typed Letter dated 9/8/1977 from Barry Goldwater, U.S. Senator from Arizona, to U.S. Attorney General Griffin B. Bell, regarding the possibility of the Justice Department indicting Richard M. Helms for perjury. Goldwater states that he is on the Senate Committee on Armed Services and the Select Committee on Intelligence, and he has attended every session involving Helms with the Church Committee. Goldwater presumes that it was natural to expect that some officials would lie to protect the President. Goldwater also claims that Helms was following precedents set by prior Directors of Central Intelligence. Goldwater praises Helms' patriotism. Sent from Washington, D.C. on United States Senate letterhead.
