Container Summary
TLS dated 6/2/1980 from Graham Greene to Francis Steegmuller. 1 page. Reference to receiving a copy of Steegmuller's book, "The Letters of Gustave Flaubert, 1830-1857," (1980); as well as a novel by Shirley Hazzard, probably "The Transit of Venus," (1980). Reference also to the daughter of Yvonne Cloetta, Martine, whose troubled divorce from Daniel Guy in 1979 led to the French courts awarding child custody to the latter. As a result, Greene was moved to protest the decision by returning his award as Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur to the French government, and then to appeal to Alain Peyrefitte, minister of justice under the former President Valery Giscard d'Estaing, as well as to write a brief polemic entitled, "J'Accuse," an echo of the famous one by Emile Zola on the Alfred Dreyfus affair almost a century ago. According to Hazzard, in "Greene on Capri," (p.133), extended legal battles led to no equivocal conclusion. (cf. reference to this matter and to Greene's involvement in Folder 4:36). See also a lengthy account of this event in "The Life of Graham Greene, Volume III, 1955-1991," by Norman Sherry (2004, chapters 45 and 46, pp.629-657).
