The interview begins with Clough's education and his impressions of China in 1936, and continues through his experiences with the Foreign Service: in Toronto, Canada, 1941-1942; as Vice Consul in Honduras, 1942-1945, drafted by the Army in Washington, 1945; as Vice Consul in Kunming, China, 1945; in Chungking, China, 1945-1946; in Beijing, China, 1946-1947; as Chinese Secretary in Nanking, China, 1947-1948; as Consular in charge of political section in Hong Kong, 1950-1954; at the National War College and as Deputy Director of Chinese Affairs in Washington, D.C., 1954-1958; in Bern and London, 1958-1961; as D.C.M. in Taipei, 1961-1965; as Diplomat-in-residence at Harvard, 1965-1966; and on the Policy Planning Council, 1966-1969.
