Norton, Charles Eliot. Autograph Letter Signed, 14 pages. Dated 6/7/1853. From famous professor of art history, Charles Eliot Norton to Manning Ferguson Force, here a young lawyer, later a Civil War general. He is answering a request for the form of oath taken by an Archbishop on assuming the pallium and by a Jesuit on entering his order. He provides details of his search for the information and philosophical summary of the history of the Jesuits which he discovered in the search. He fully quotes the oath of secrecy for Jesuits. Sent from Newport, Rhode Island. Acquired 1997 from Cohasco Auction.
