Container Summary

1 Autographed Letter Signed dated 01/16/1879 from Strange & Brother to Francis Bennoch responding to a letter from Bennoch and informing him of details of the efforts of William G. Peckham to meet the financial needs of Julian Hawthorne. Personal perspectives and advice are offered regarding the relationship of Peckham to Hawthorne and Hawthorne's debt to Bennoch. Strange expresses his hope that Bennoch has recovered from an attack of his "old enemy", gout, as well as his sympathy for the difficulties of their mutual friend Mr. Carr, whose business Bennoch had invested in. The letter also encloses 1 Autographed Letter Signed dated 01/14/1879 from William G. Peckham to E. B. Strange & Co. written on the letterhead of the Law Offices of Peckham & Tyler explaining that Julian Hawthorne's brother-in-law, John Amelung, is trying to sell Hawthorne's mortgage in Brooklyn while Peckham is arranging the sale of a Chicago mortgage. He mentions that Hawthorne's "family needs are very great" due to his wife's illness and that he needs to raise as much money as possible. Reference to May ("Minne") Hawthorne. Sent from New York, New York.
