Container Summary

1 Autographed Letter Signed dated 02/12/1880 from Julian Hawthorne to Francis Bennoch thanking him for "rescuing" his insurance policy and asking him about the possibility of using that policy to regain possession of his silverware from Gillig's American Exchange. He mentions several writing projects to published that year, including a book of fairy tales and regular reviews, and his hopes for an appointment as Secretary of Legation under James Russell Lowell, the new U. S. Minister of London. He discusses his warm reception among the "higher circles" of London society and wishes Bennoch an end to his bad health. Reference to "The World", Kegan Paul, the illustrator Randolph Caldecott, the "Spectator", "To-Day", May ("Minne") Hawthorne, Taylor & Co.'s Repository, the Secretary of Legation, Ehrman Syme Nadal, the Secretary of State, William Maxwell Evarts, Charles Dickens, Jr., and Mrs. Bennoch.
