Container Summary

1 Autographed Letter Signed dated 11/06/1877 from Julian Hawthorne to Francis Bennoch written on black-bordered mourning paper explaining the circumstances surrounding a debt he incurred when he accepted an advance from Alexander Strahan for his novel "Garth", which Strahan subsequently turned down. He refers to this situation as the "McCorquodale affair" after the name of the party who provided the advance, the printer George McCorquodale. Hawthorne complains of his straitened circumstances and lays out the advice of Henry Arthur Bright, his father's friend, instructing him to pursue help from the Royal Literary Fund (the "Literary Poorhouse"). He states that after humbling himself in this way he will "expect to regard such professions as crossing-sweeping and bootblacking with respect and envy". Reference to bankruptcy, May ("Minne") Hawthorne, his children, and Octavian Blewitt, the secretary of the Royal Literary Fund. Sent from Way's End, Twickenham, England.
