This series contains correspondence regarding the proposed combined resignation of Honorary Members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters due to the Academy's failure to publicly oppose the Vietnam War. Graham Greene sent a cover letter and a draft of the combined resignation letter to all Honorary Members. Their responses and continued correspondence with Greene are contained here, along with carbon copies of Greene's replies.

Container Summary

1 TLS from Graham Greene, a cover letter, written to fellow Honorary Members of the American Academy-Institute of Arts and Letters regarding his resignation due to the Academy's unconcern for political events, specifically the Vietnam war. Reference to Alan Nevins and Marianne Moore. 2 carbon copy drafts of a letter written to the Presidents of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Letters stating that the undersigned Honorary Members submit their resignation due to an absence of protest made against the Vietnam war. The drafts were written by Herbert Read at the request of Greene. The second copy contains autograph corrections, some in Greene's hand and some in the hand of Pierre Boulez. Typed list of 37 Honorary Members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters dated 12/12/1967. After each name Greene indicated by autograph note if the person had agreed to sign. 1 TL (photocopy) dated May 19 (no year) from Greene to the American Academy giving his resignation and referring to his hope of organizing a mass resignation.
