Total of 9 ALS (with 1 envelope) from George Richey to his wife Adelaide Richey. 1 ALS dated 5/2/1917 Reference to the Proceedings of the Board held at Tidworth. Reference also to Jourdain, Phoebe and to Freda's birthday. 1 ALS dated 5/3/1917 "At long last we are back for a rest of 4 whole days!...Even now tho' we can't get away from the eternal shells. They've been dropping all round continuously for 3 solid hours without a break. I'm dining with the General tomorrow." Reference to Lonie and Guthrie, Laura Turnbull, Sir Richard and to Mrs. Richey going to Eastbourne. 1 ALS dated 5/5/1917 Reference to Daddie Drake. "I had quite a civilized dinner with the General last night. He is an awfully nice fellow and seems to like me. He was sounding me about quite a lot of things and we are working up some stints together. Quite a number of fellows who were on the Course at Aldershot with me have been killed." Richey refers to the late Brigadier-General Estcourt Matthews as a "gallant gentleman" and asks Mrs. Richey to write to his widow, Mrs. Matthews. Richey refers to a pink tonic which his wife sends to him and that has a "wonderfully stimulating effect" on his nerves. He also writes about asking Lady Ellerman to be god-mother of their next child (Michael). 1 ALS dated 5/6/1917"I honestly am not looking forward to another 25 or 6 days in the line repelling all sorts of attacks, being shelled and holding the flank of the army. We were personally thanked by the C.in C. for our good work and cheerful spirits during the trying and hard times we have been thro'." Reference to the 23rd Battalion and to Nicolaus. 1 ALS dated 5/7/1917"My Brigadier spoke to me this morning privately and said he was going to put my name forward for a Brigade." 1 ALS dated 5/9/1917Reference to Jourdain and to Mayho. 1 ALS dated 5/11/1917 1 ALS with envelope postmarked 5/28/1917 written from the Grosvenor Hotel, London, after Richey had been to Eastbourne, Sussex to visit his wife and son. 1 ALS dated 5/30/1917 Reference to Captain Brothers being killed. Reference to Mayho.
