Container Summary

1 ALS Hans Wagner to Michael Richey regarding his prospects of getting on a ship, also signed by Dr. Th. Wagner. *from Richey's notes: "At the end of the European War my last seagoing appointment was as flotilla navigator to a destroyer flotilla based on Sheerness whose principal task was providing the guardship at Cuxhaven, near Hamburg. It was a hard period for German civilians with widespread food shortages and I used to help Hans's family with , e.g. coffee, butter and so on from the ship's galley and later food parcels from friends in England. Hans I had first found - then a schoolboy- gazing longingly out to sea through a telescope. He desperately wanted to go to sea - an ambition I was able one way and another to help him with. He became Master of a freighter and then a Kiel Canal pilot. We only met once after those days but he kept in touch."
