Container Summary

1 ALS from Eric Gill to Michael Richey. Gill is responding to a letter sent by Richey and comments on donors in the church, criticizes carvings by Dom Hubert, and emphasizes the importance of precision in stone carving. *Richey adds in his notes: "This was addressed to me at Downside, where I was still a pupil - aged 18. Dom Hubert referred to is Hubert Van Zeller, a Monk of Downside who at one stage decided to try his vocation as a Carthusian, at Parkminster. When he left he gave me a number of his works - drawings, carvings, including a drawing (I think) a crucifix. I wondered - in all innocence - whether Gill might carve it and wrote to him. Reading the letter through so many years later I wonder whether E.G. did not think I was a master!"
